Many people haven’t had the opportunity to be exposed to the fascinating and innovative world of Materials Engineering; a discipline focused on the discovery and design of new materials that is integral to every industry that serves our modern world. We aim to change that.

For 50 years, Monash University Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been at the forefront of its discipline both in Australia and internationally.

 

Materials engineers help to make things stronger, lighter, more functional, more sustainable and more cost-effective. They research, design and develop specifications of materials to create products or investigate their properties. Materials engineers modify materials such as light alloys, ceramics, chemicals, composites, new metals, plastics and rubber to improve the performance of their intended use and increase cost-effectiveness.

For 50 years, Monash University Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been at the forefront of its discipline both in Australia and internationally.

We look forward to working with the talented team of staff and students at Monash Materials Engineering to increase visibility of this incredible, dynamic science by bringing you a sprinkling of regular features that investigate their interdisciplinary thinking across design, engineering, sustainability and responsible business.

Our collaborative stories will showcase the projects of current undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff, their learnings and their applications with industry inspired by:

  • Letting design lead science and science respond to design
  • Biomimicry - learning from nature and its superiority; nature knows how to self heal
  • Better commodity materials for advanced applications
  • “No fear of failure” - the importance of fostering a learning philosophy
  • The shift beyond maths and physics to the future skills of design coding and ideating
  • Challenging the commercialisation process where materials are often invented and then needs formed
  • Celebrating beauty and empathy in design
