This winter, Melbourne magazine Matters Journal brings you Drawing Matter, a monthly event series hosted in the cosy, lo-fi surrounds of Cam’s Kiosk in the Abbotsford Convent.
The second event in the series invites guests on an evening of seaweed appreciation, led by Melbourne-based artist Lichen Kelp. Lichen will discuss her bond with marine algae and will take us down the "kelp highway" from Norway to Japan to Chile, where recent seaweed discoveries have anthropologists rethinking the history of human migration.
Combining contemplative drawing with an intimate talk, each event will host a guest speaker who is an original thinker in their field. As guests absorb the talk, they are invited to sketch an artefact relating to the theme - it could be honeycomb, or kelp, or funghi - displayed in the centre of the room. It’s like life drawing, minus the nudity.
Seaweed nibbles will be available and Cam’s will also be mixing up a special kelp cocktail.
