Interning at Matters Journal
Applications are now open for Matters Journal’s internship program. We’re offering an editorial internship position with hands-on experience towards our digital publication and next print magazine, due for release February 2019.

This internship includes a stipend of $50 per day for transport and other costs. Our studio is located in the Abbotsford Convent, Melbourne. Reporting to: Editor, Digital Editor and Creative Director
Location: Matters Journal/Local Peoples office, 1st floor Mercator Building, Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers St, Abbotsford
Position type: Voluntary internship – 2-3 months, volunteering an average of 1 to 2 regular days per week. While this is a voluntary position, the successful candidate will receive a stipend of $50 per day to cover travel or other expenses relating to the internship.
Internship period: Late-November to Late-January

Launched in February 2018 by Local Peoples, Matters Journal is a weekly digital and biannual print publication connecting communities with people, ideas and businesses doing good. We tell interconnected stories from the worlds of arts, design, technology, health, food and the environment. Matters Journal is currently stocked in bookstores and newsagents nationally, and is available online.

Led by Giuseppe Demaio, Local Peoples is a multi-disciplinary design and communications studio grounded in human-centred design. Specialising in brand identity and experience design, Local Peoples uses sincere community engagement, place-making, content and digital services to fully realise project results.

About Matters Journal internships
The Matters Journal Internship Program offers short-term, targeted opportunities to gain valuable media industry experience in a hands-on environment. This is a unique opportunity to develop new skills alongside a close-knit team dedicated to supporting local communities and a sustainable future.
The principal purpose of our internship program is to provide the intern with hands-on work experience within a dynamic and engaged editorial environment. A position description has been provided below as a guide, offering applicants an insight into the type of experience that will be gained during this internship. Matters Journal will work closely with the successful applicant to ensure that the internship is of benefit to them.
The Editorial Intern will play a central part in supporting the Matters Journal website and February 2019 print edition. The intern will develop valuable experience in the production of a print publication featuring Australian and international writers, illustrators, photographers and designers. This position may suit someone studying journalism, publishing, editing or English, or with a particular interest in print media and design. You'll be given opportunities to research and creatively contribute to our online website while also gaining experience in the nitty-gritty business of producing a print anthology. As part of the internship, you will:
Work alongside the Editors and gain an insight into the editing process as it relates to a print and digital publication
Writing news stories and events for the Matters Journal website
Assisting with the online publishing of content and promotion via social media
Learn the steps to print publication, including working with writers to develop articles, fact checking, proofreading, working with a designer, sourcing a printer and promoting the new edition
Assist with operational activities
Attend Matters Journal and Local Peoples team meetings when possible to observe and contribute
Identify and implement continuous improvement processes
Contribute to a culture of safe working, collaboration and mentorship
Media and creative agency mentorship and professional development with support from senior staff
Experience working in a publishing environment, both print and digital, as we bring our third issue to life
Letters of support/referee: you will receive letter/s of recommendation (as negotiated with Matters Journal/Local Peoples upon the successful completion/ongoing conduct of your internship)
You will have the opportunity to pitch, research and write original content for publication. The Matters Journal team will work with you to refine your writing to become publishable content
